Since 1992, natural gemstones have been at the heart of Palenque’s sterling silver jewellery collections. For co-founder and designer Susana, they are much more than an accessory or a seasonal fashion trend. Each stone is a piece of wearable art: a natural creation that has formed over millions of years before it ever reaches our shops. 

No two gemstones are ever exactly alike. Their markings, inclusions, layers, colours and patterns tell the story of how they formed deep within the earth.

For Autumn 2026, Susana has selected three natural gemstones that each bring a different palette, mood and story to our Monet sterling silver jewellery collection: Chrome Chalcedony, Amethyst Agate and Chrysocolla.

Monet Chrome Chalcedony: Earthy Green for Autumn

With its vivid natural green balanced by earthy tones, Monet Chrome Chalcedony feels perfectly suited to the transition into autumn.

After the brightness of summer, these deeper, more grounded colours bring a sense of calm and contrast while retaining the vitality of green. The result is a gemstone that feels connected to the natural world and works beautifully with the warmer, layered colours of an autumn wardrobe.

Amethyst Agate: Purple Made Everyday

Purple can sometimes feel like a bold colour choice. With Amethyst Agate, Susana wanted to show how wearable it can be.

Soft lilac amethyst tones are layered with the neutral beige and earthy shades of agate, creating a gemstone that feels both distinctive and easy to wear. Rather than being reserved for special occasions, these muted purple tones can become an everyday neutral, working effortlessly alongside other colours.

Look closely and you can see layers, patterns and crystals naturally mixing together within the stone. It is this combination of unusual detail and understated colour that makes Amethyst Agate so versatile.

Chrysocolla: Landscapes in Stone

Flecks of green, blue and brown appear across each Chrysocolla stone, creating patterns that resemble abstract landscapes. Susana particularly loves the way the colours seem to capture an Impressionist artwork within the stone itself.

Every Chrysocolla cabochon is unique. Each one is hand-cut from a block by our artisans in Mexico before being shaped by hand. Because the natural colour and pattern vary throughout the original block, every cabochon reveals a different combination of greens, blues, browns and matrix.

From Natural Stone to Wearable Art

Long before a gemstone becomes a ring, pendant or pair of earrings, it has already undergone an extraordinary natural journey.

Susana hand-selects each stone, looking at its colours, patterns, character and natural formation before deciding what type of jewellery it should become. From there, our artisans in Mexico create a setting specifically for that individual stone.

There is no standard mould that every gemstone is made to fit. Instead, each piece begins with the stone itself. Our artisans work from a sheet of sterling silver, carefully measuring and drawing around the gemstone to establish the exact dimensions needed. The silver is then shaped and soldered to create the casing that will hold the stone. Once the setting has been formed, it is hollowed out, the gemstone is placed inside and the silver is manually adjusted around it.

The result is a bespoke sterling silver setting made for one particular gemstone.

Why We Keep the Natural Matrix

One of the defining characteristics of Palenque’s gemstone jewellery is that we deliberately retain visible areas of the host rock, or matrix. These natural features might be considered imperfections. We see them differently. The matrix, inclusions and variations give each stone character and preserve a glimpse of its geological history. By leaving these details visible, we allow the individuality of the gemstone to remain at the centre of the design.

It also means that when you purchase a Palenque gemstone ring, pendant or pair of earrings, you are taking home something that no one else will have in exactly the same form. 

For some customers, this becomes part of the joy of collecting natural gemstone jewellery: you might discover several pieces made from the same type of stone, yet each one will have its own completely different pattern, colouring and character.
