This optical phenomenon is caused by the fibrous structure of the stone, parallel fibres of crocidolite that have been replaced by quartz and iron oxide during the stone's formation, and it is this structure that gives tiger eye its characteristic banded appearance, warm golden-brown and amber tones arranged in parallel bands that seem to glow from within the stone.
